In their final tuneup before next Friday’s opener, the varsity football squad took on Tiffin Columbian last night at Roy C. Start Stadium. They host the Eastwood Eagles in the home opener next Friday, August 28th at 7:30. With many returning starters on both sides of the ball, the Spartans look to capture their first Toledo City League Title since 1979. Led by seniors Christian Matamoros, Joseph Smith III and Tino Lopez, the Spartans will face a tough non-league schedule before starting City League play on October 2nd at Waite High School. All-City Junior running back Stephon Watson leads a balanced attack on offense with both Brandon Winters and Michael Tucker competing for playing time at the quarterback position. Experience up front on the offensive line led by Santo Perez, Jahniel Douglas and Tino Lopez will be key to the running attack led by Watson who rushed for over 1,000 yards as a sophomore. On the defensive side, Joseph Smith III leads the linebacker crew who look to force turnovers on a more consistent basis. Weeks 4 and 5 prove to be difficult with a road tilt at Cincinnati Winton Woods September 18th and Cleveland Heights visiting on the 25th for Homecoming. Both opponents are highly respected and talented and will serve as good preparation for the City League schedule. Good luck to all our football teams in the 2015 season!
