The boys’ cross country team won its final home meet of the season on Wednesday afternoon at Ottawa Park. The final scores were Start 55, Rogers 59, Bowsher 68, Waite 70, Scott 90, and Woodward 119.
Seven seniors were honored at the meet: Ethan Pennywitt, Josh Yeager, Caleb Campbell, Kelly Gibson, Richard Rogers, Tim Warring and Andy Roberson. Pennywitt and Roberson have been members of the Spartan junior high and high school programs for all five years since the Toledo Public Schools restored cross country in 2011.
Pennywitt won the race on a late surge, pulling away in the final mile for a big 25-second win. The rest of the team’s five scoring runners were Phillip Dutridge (6th), Josh Yeager (11th), Kelly Gibson (17th), and Justin Cauls (20th).
“We rested five of our top eight runners and weren’t running all-out from the gun, so I was surprised that we won,” said head coach Jesse Squire. “But that’s what happens when you have tremendous depth. I can’t thank track coach John Wodarski enough for all the new athletes he brought to the team this year.”
The rest of the team’s runners were Keathun Cunningham (26th), Adam Skibinski (27th), Richard Rogers (29th), Delano Reynolds (37th), Tim Warring (39th), Brandon Smith (40th) and Zach Kirian (43rd).
“I’m kind of sad to run my last race at Ottawa Park,” said Pennywitt.
The team is off until next Saturday (October 17), when they contest the City Championship meet at Collins Park golf course. Alumni are invited to come out and join the team and its supporters. Race time is 9:00 AM, with awards to be presented at 11:30 AM.
