The varsity football team faced adversity several times in their opener at Clyde but in the end a FG with 2.2 seconds remaining was the deciding factor. Down 7-0 early, the Spartans clawed their way back into the game to lead 17-10 late in the 3rd quarter. However, two penalties stalled a drive and the Fliers took advantage scoring two touchdowns on their next two possessions to take a 24-17 lead. Caleb Coyne hooked up with Dontay Ivery on a 4th and 8 play from midfield to knot the score at 24-24. The defense wasn’t able to hold on Clyde’s ensuing drive with the FG sailing through the uprights as time expired. Coyne relieved sophomore Jeremiah Beringer at the half and threw two touchdown passes to senior Dontay Ivery. Dashawntae Madison intercepeted a pass at the goal line to snuff out a Flier drive in the 2nd quarter.
In week 2, they travel to Swanton for a 7:00 kickoff this Friday (8/31).
