Congratulations to the Lady Spartans track team as they advanced from the Regional meet held last night Amherst-Steele High School in Lorain, Ohio. Cierra Fizer led the way by finishing 4th in the 100m dash to secure a spot in the state meet next week and anchored both relays that also advance to Columbus next weekend. Fizer ran 12.47 in the 100m while the 4 x 100m team (Ragland, Ricks, Worthy, Fizer) won and also broke a 31-year-old school record in the process. The 4 x 200 team (Ragland, Smith, Worthy, Fizer) also qualified finishing 2nd to Medina High School.
Mia Gardner narrowly missed making it to Columbus finishing 5th in the 400m dash (58.94) while fellow teammate Amari Franklin finished 8th overall.
The boys team placed 7th in the 4 x 100m relay while placing 8th in the 4 x 200 relay (PR on the year).
The 5th place finish is the best in school history for girls since the 1982 runner-up team and also places the largest number of qualifiers in the state tournament since 2002.
A family tradition comes to a close as well this year as Jacob DeVaul (2019) finishes a string of siblings who have been in the track or cross-country programs since 2011. Brother Tyler (2011) and sister Brianna (2015) both competed for the Spartans. Jacob was able to run in the 4 x 200m relay after suffering through a nagging foot injury for most of the spring. Congrats DeVaul family!
